The 8 Best Things To Do At Minister Creek

Crossing Stream on Minister Creek Trail

The US Forest Service tells us that the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) comprises over half a million acres of sustainable land. Minister Creek is located centrally in the ANF, off of the famous Route 666 (or, as the locals call it, ‘triple 6’).

The ANF is flush with beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and amazing outdoor opportunities. At Minister Creek, campers, hikers, and fishers will enjoy an abundance of activities. Let’s explore the best things to do at this little-known gem in the heart of the ANF!

1. Explore The Minister Creek Hiking Trail

Hiking Trail at Minister Creek

One of the best things to do at this scenic destination is to strap on some hiking shoes and hit the trails. The Minister Creek Trail System includes 10 miles of hiking trails and three different loops. Make sure your lungs are prepared! The hikes include steep elevation climbs over rough terrain.

Along the trails, you’ll find massive rock formations, with some trails taking you right through the rocks, offering a unique and pleasant hike any time of the year.

There are three loop options at Minister Creek:

  • South Loop (2 miles)
  • Middle Loop (2 miles)
  • North Loop (6 miles)

If you have the time and the endurance, I highly recommend doing the longer North Loop. It takes you past the overlook, through rock formations, and down to Triple Forks, hitting all the best scenery in the entire Minister Creek Recreation Area.

For a more in-depth look at each trail, check out our guide on the Minister Creek Trail!

2. Explore the Rock Formations

Rock formations at Minister Creek

The ANF and surrounding area are well known for impressive rock formations, the most notable being at Beartown Rocks. Minister Creek is no exception and offers hikers and explorers the chance of walking right beside massive boulders along the trail.

There are three main rock formation areas to explore at Minister Creek:

  • Minister Valley Overlook: The overlook sits atop a huge rock formation, offering views of the surrounding Minister Valley and Minister Creek. (Map Coordinates)
  • North Loop: Just past the overlook on the North Loop, the trail goes right between two massive boulders. (Map Coordinates)
  • South Loop: Near the southern tip of the South Loop, the trail once again goes right between boulder formations, offering unique views and engaging scenery. (Map Coordinates)

Rock climbing is allowed at Minister Creek, but there aren’t many established routes, and none are listed on popular climbing apps like Mountain Project. Many of the climbs are gritty and damp, but there are boundless opportunities for First Ascents as this area is not well known in the rock climbing community.

Besides rock climbing, it’s enjoyable just to walk around the formations and view the bizarre trees growing straight from the rock, the conglomerates, and the unique shapes of the boulders.

3. Stop At The Minister Valley Overlook

Approximately 0.8 miles from the start of the North Loop Trail is the Minister Valley Overlook. It sits at the pinnacle of a jutting rock formation around 1,800 feet in elevation.

The overlook offers astounding views of the Minister Valley, including far-off views of Minister Creek that can only be seen in the winter when trees are bare. The views are gorgeous in the fall when the leaves blaze bright orange, yellow, and red.

No matter when you go, the overlook captures the beauty of the Allegheny National Forest, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the valley. Just remember that it’s a very steep hike to get there!

4. Backpack on the North Country Trail (NCT)

North Country Trail Sign

The northern section of the North Loop intersects with the North Country National Scenic Trail for a short time before heading back south toward the Minister Creek Campground. This is a great place to jump on the NCT to do some overnight backpacking.

The NCT intersects with the North Loop in two places:

If you plan to do an overnight backpacking trip, ensure you have everything you need in your pack. If you’re new to backpacking, here are some of the essentials you might need:

  • For Sleeping: Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, footprint tarp
  • Pack: 45-50L pack with rain cover. Dry bags for storage.
  • Cooking: Stove + fuel, cooking pot, utensils, water filter/purifier, and food
  • Safety & Comfort: Headlamp, map/compass, phone charger, first-aid kit, multitool, fire starter, bug spray, toiletries, sunscreen, lip balm.

5. Camp At The Minister Creek Campground

If you want to spend a few days at this scenic destination, consider staying at the Minister Creek Campground. This small, six-site campground is self-pay and offers campers a spot right alongside the babbling Minister Creek.

Here are the most important things to know about camping at Minister Creek:

  • Location: Approximately 15 miles south of Sheffield off State Route 666 or 19 miles east of East Hickory. (Map Coordinates)
  • Fee: $12 per night (half price for Golden Age and Access Passport holders).
  • Potable Water: Yes, seasonal from May through October
  • Garbage On Site: No
  • Amenities: Vault toilets at the back of the campground. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate and a tent pad.
  • Camping Season: The campground is open seasonally from April 1st to October 31st.
  • Reservations: No. This is a first-come, first-served campground.

Black bears roam the Allegheny National Forest and may be attracted to the campsite by the smell of food. Be sure to pack away all food when not in use and stay vigilant in the campground.

You can check out our guide on what to do if you see a black bear for more information on how to stay safe around bears!

6. Tent Camp At The Triple Forks West Dispersed Campsites

Triple Forks Campsite at Minister Creek

Near the intersection with the NCT trail at the northern end of the North Loop Trail are the Triple Forks West campsites. These are dispersed campsites that must be hiked to and are free to camp at.

To get to the Triple Forks campsites, you’ll have to hike approximately 2.6 miles on the North Loop. The sites are just after the western intersection with the NCT.

There are plenty of flat spots to pitch a tent. Just be aware that this is where Minister Creek meets up with two other streams (hence the Triple Forks name), so it can be muddy if there’s been a lot of rain, and mosquitoes can be a problem in the summer.

7. Fish In Minister Creek

Minister Creek

Fishing is a Pennsylvania pastime as old as time. Water sources are abundant in the state, and the Allegheny National Forest is no different.

Minister Creek is part of a Wild Brook Trout Enhancement Area, so all brook trout caught must be released. You can check all the regulations and necessary licenses for fishing on the Fish and Boat Commission website.

Here are the most important things to know about fishing at Minister Creek:

  • No tackle restrictions
  • Brook trout are catch-and-release only
  • All other species are under inland regulations
  • During trout season, the harvest limit is 5 trout per day
  • Fishing is open year-round
  • A trout/salmon permit is required

8. View The Wildlife

Because Minister Creek is tucked deep in the Allegheny National Forest, you may be lucky enough to spot some interesting wildlife. This is more likely in the shoulder seasons when fewer hikers are out.

Some of the most common wildlife you’ll see at Minister Creek include:

  • White-tailed deer
  • Black Bear
  • Grey Fox
  • Turkey
  • Squirrels and chipmunks
  • Salamanders
  • Frogs
  • Beaver
  • Raccoon
  • Ruffed Grouse
  • Rattlesnakes
  • Rabbits and hares
  • River Otter
  • Owls, Eagles, Hawks, and Osprey

I was lucky enough to spot a barred owl one time at Minister Creek. Another time, we came across a big wood frog sitting in a stream crossing. You never know what you’ll see at Minister Creek!
