Carlsbad Caverns is home to some of the most unique environments. Upon the surface is a network of trails running through the hot Chihuahuan Desert. Below is the ever-cool cave system that stretches for miles underground. 

If you plan on visiting Carlsbad Caverns with a dog, you may be wondering where your dog can and can’t go, and how to explore the caverns if you bring your pup to the park.

The Carlsbad Caverns pet policy states that dogs are only permitted in the following places:

• Paved trails and walkways
• Roadways and parking lots
• Picnic areas
• Overlooks

Pets cannot go in the cave, inside buildings, in the backcountry, or on any unpaved trails. Pets are also not allowed in the amphitheater area during the Bat Flight Program.

Carlsbad Caverns Pet Policy: Can Dogs Go In Carlsbad Caverns?

Knowing where your pet can and can’t go will make your trip to this outstanding park all the more enjoyable. Let’s break down the official Carlsbad Caverns pet policy so we know exactly where dogs are and aren’t allowed.

Here’s Where Pets Can’t Go In The Park

Pets are not allowed in the following places:

• Inside buildings
• In the cave
• On unpaved surface trails
• In the amphitheater during the Bat Flight Program
• Unattended in your car

Exceptions apply for service animals, which are allowed in most areas of the park with the exception of guided adventure tours and off-trail.

It may sound restrictive, but rest assured, there are plenty of things to do with your dog (or cat!) at Carlsbad Caverns. We visited with both our dog and our cat and had a wonderful time exploring the beauty of the desert landscape.

What To Do With Dogs At Carlsbad Caverns: 5 Adventurous Options

While most people come to Carlsbad Caverns to explore the caves, there are a surprising number of things to do aboveground at this unique destination, even if you brought your furry pal with you!

According to the Carlsbad Caverns pet policy, pets are allowed in 5 main areas around the park:

1. Hike A Paved Trail

There are two paved trails at Carlsbad Caverns National Park that you can explore with your dog. Neither is very long, but it’s a way to get your pup out to stretch their legs and soak up the sunshine.

• Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail: This partially paved path starts near the Natural Entrance to Carlsbad Cavern and winds through a stunning desert landscape. The northern section of the path is unpaved and not accessible to dogs.
• Walnut Canyon Trail: This short, paved trail is only 0.4 miles total and provides plenty of informational signs to learn about the park’s denizens and nature.

2. Take A Scenic Drive

We all know our dogs love sticking their heads out the window and letting their ears flop in the wind, slobber and fur flying everywhere. And I think we enjoy it just as much!

The Desert Scenic Drive (also known as the Reef Top Circle) is a one-way gravel and washboard road approximately 10 miles long that’s the perfect way to get some miles in with your pup at the park.

Along the way, you’ll pass by several cave parking areas like Spider and Chimney Cave. You’ll pass by the Rattlesnake Canyon, Guadalupe Ridge, and Juniper Ridge Trails before connecting back in with the main Carlsbad Cavern Highway.

3. Relax At A Picnic Table

Pups are welcome in picnic areas at the park, so it’s a great place to relax with your pet and take in the scenery.

There are two picnic areas at Carlsbad:

• Visitor Center: Picnic tables are available on the east end of the visitor center parking lot.
• Rattlesnake Springs: Enjoy a natural spring and a lush grove of cottonwood trees in this unusually green riparian landscape.

4. Trot The Paved Walkways

Okay, it may not be that exciting, but the Carlsbad Caverns pet policy says that dogs are allowed in parking lots and on paved walkways near the visitor center. It’s an easy way to take in the beauty of the park with your dog while still following the rules.

The best place for this is near the visitor center, where there is a large paved parking lot and paved sidewalks that your dog can explore. Keep an eye out for cactus spines and make sure the pavement is cool enough for your dog’s paws.

5. Check Out The Overlooks

If you decide to take a ride down the scenic desert loop road, there are a few overlooks and pull-offs where you can stop to snap a photo with your best pal in the rugged desert surroundings.

Walnut Canyon Overlook (along the Walnut Canyon Trail) is another cool spot to take your pup to enjoy the scenery.

How To Explore The Caves When Visiting With A Dog

Whether you’re traveling and can’t leave the dog at home or another circumstance forces you to bring your pet to the park, there are still ways to see the famous Carlsbad Cavern while keeping your pet safe.

The Carlsbad Caverns pet policy says that pets (except service animals) are not allowed in the caverns. And remember, pets are also not allowed to be left in vehicles at the park. Temperatures inside your vehicle can soar well above 100℉ in the hot Chihuahuan Desert!

On-Site Kennel Service

Carlsbad Caverns Trading Company runs a temperature-controlled kennel service in the park where you can take your pet while you explore the caves.

Here’s what to know about using the on-site kennel service:

• Fee: $15/day
• Operating Hours: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
• Reservations: Not accepted. The kennel is on a first-come, first-served basis
• Vaccines: Vaccination records are required, with the expiration date visible on the paper. Tags are not accepted.
• Amenities: Water is the only thing provided for your pet. You must bring any food and bedding they might need.
• Potty breaks: Employees do not handle pets and do not stay in the kennel room with pets.

Before dropping your pup off at the kennel service, be sure to walk them around for a relief break, as the employees do not walk the dogs for the duration of their stay.

Consider bringing a reliable, heavy-duty dog bowl, like the Basecamp Dog Bowl, for your dog’s water and food needs. It’s hard-sided with an anti-slip base in case your furry pal gets overly excited in their kennel.

Boarding Services Nearby

If you’d prefer a little more hands-on care for your furry pal while you explore the caverns, boarding services at Bark and Buddies in the town of Carlsbad is a great alternative to the on-site kennel. Bark and Buddies is located about a half hour northeast of the park.

How Long Will Your Dog Be Waiting?

The National Park Service tells us that there are over 119 caves at Carlsbad Caverns. That said, not all of them are open to visitors, and many are too difficult or dangerous to reach. At Carlsbad, there are 4 main cave system areas to explore, each with varying difficulty and hike times.

It’s natural to worry about your dog while hiking in the caverns at Carlsbad. You may be wondering how long your dog will be in their kennel.

The truth is, how long your dog will stay in their kennel is completely dependent on how you hike the caverns. There are a few trail options and plenty of ways to shorten the trip to get back to your furbaby.

Here’s a breakdown of how long it takes to hike the caverns:

• Natural Entrance Trail: If you decide to hike down into the cave instead of opting for the elevator, the trail is about 1.25 miles and takes around 1 hour to complete. It is very steep, taking you down about 750 feet into the cavern system.
• Big Room: The most popular trail, and where the Natural Entrance Trail ends. This 1.25-mile trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete and is fairly flat.
• Ranger-Guided Tours: If you’d prefer to explore the cave with a ranger, you can sign up for one of two cave tours offered by the National Park Service.
  • King’s Palace Tour: a 90-minute ranger-guided tour through easy terrain. This tour takes visitors to areas not available on self-guided tours.
  • Lower Cave Tour: A strenuous 3-hour tour involving climbing down ladders and using knotted hand ropes to enter an area below the Big Room.

Depending on where you want to hike in the cavern, your trip can be as short as 1 hour or as long as half a day. 

When we explored Carlsbad Cavern, we opted to take the Natural Entrance Trail down to the Big Room, hiked the Big Room Trail, and took the elevator back up to the visitor center. All in all, it took us about 2.5 hours to complete everything.

If you want to experience the best of the cavern while keeping your time as short as possible, take the elevator down, explore the Big Room Trail, and take the elevator back up to the visitor center.

All in all, Carlsbad Caverns is one of the least dog-friendly National Parks in New Mexico. Pets are limited to paved surfaces, picnic areas, and overlooks. However, you and your canine companion can still enjoy this park together by sticking to a few specified areas.
